Quality not so great.

Before ordering an aux to rca cable, my skybox was connected to the home theater reciever via HDMI then another HDMI ran from the reciever to the TV.

The sound was great. Bass response was really good too. After using an aux to rca from the TV to the reciever the bass has degraded.... is it because the TV is bad at processing the audio?

'Aux' isn't a connector type. It's simply the shortened version of the word 'auxiliary' which is another way of saying spare / other / extra. An auxiliary input could be a jack plug, or XLR, or RCAs, or any other signal carrying connection.

However, in consumer gear the two most common connector types for analogue audio are Stereo RCA and 3.5mm jack plug.

I presume your cable is jack to RCA. That would suggest you're using the headphone socket on the TV for audio. If that's the case then it could be a poor headphone amp in the TV, or that the headphone volume menu has some kind of tone control operating.

Alternatively, your amp could be treating the signal going into that audio input differently and so omitting the sub (if you have one). There isn't enough info in your OP to get down to a proper diagnosis.

Analogue stereo and digital stereo have the potential to be equal in quality.

DD5.1 doesn't match the fidelity. It uses lossy compression. However, the bass can be supplemented by an additional low frequency effect track (the .1 bit) which provides T-Rex stomping sounds.

Its probably that. Is there any way to improve it?

Can you connect them with an optical cable?

Yes, I could but don't think that would change anything??

I would try it, that's how I connect my Amp to my TV, sounds great.

What setup you got there?

An LG TV connected (via optical cable) to a Yamaha AS-501 amp, connected to some ancient TDL RTL3's. It's a beast!

Optical is just the same quality as HDMI ARC. The only difference is that ARC can also pass the signal for Dolby Atmos (DD+). To answer the question then, yes, compared to a not-so-good headphone socket connection, Optical would be significantly better. Just make sure to set the TV audio out appropriately for whatever receiver you have.

If we're talking about something that can do Dolby Digital decoding, then make sure that the Sky box is set to 'Dolby' output, and the TV Optical Out (not the HDMI ARC Out) is set to Auto so that it follows the Sky box signal when it switches between DD and PCM and back.
