Triangle at top of stairs question

Hi
I am looking at replacing my bannister/newells and making the side glass instead of wood.

However there is this triangle wooden bit at the top (between top of stairs and wall) that I am unsure whether it is safe to just remove. I am wary of even removing any of it to look inside. It does sound hollow when banged though.....

Could anyone please advise?
Pics are of the triangle bit from top and bottom of stairs.

I would just leave that bit as it is after making it look nice and start the glass after it. You may find inside its a load of nogging/s ugly supports that you can not remove easily.

I thought maybe leave it but because of the angle the glass panels would leave a weird space near the top...

I cant quite tell the shape of the section from that angle in the picture of your stairs.

I'll take off that top panel at the weekend and have a peek. I'll update as I go.
Thanks. I'm a bit of a diy chicken after I screwed through a gas pipe laying floorboards!!

I built mine myself with a brought oak top and bottom rail and had the glass made at a merchants following cardboard templates that I had made so the last section at the top of the stairs was a different shape to the rest as it met the landing.

I would make right mess of that! I guess I could get just the last bit made if necessary. Not home for the rest of the week but will take a look from the side when I get back. All depends what I find beh8nd that panel anyway I guess. Fingers crossed for a nice empty space

I don't have a section as big as that but system the glass slots into the base and the 10mm slot has glued in strips inbetween the glass sections so I just did not glue them in on the last section so I can take them out and slide the glass down to the wider section and lift it out, but never had to but it will need cleaning behind there from time to time

Thanks for all the replies.
So I pulled off the end panel and it was totally empty inside so that's one hassle sorted.
Unfortunately I then realised the string isn't wide enough for the grooved base rail so I am going with a different plan which saves me all kinds of headaches.
