Thank you to all commenters for your advice, and I can now report that a trip to a plumbing supplier's website netted me a 5/8" converter which is now happily seated on my tap, and a 3/4" brass connector is now holding the hose connector firmly in place. Job done!

Wouldn't surprise me... Any ideas as to how the devil I'm going to attach a hose connector to that thing? I am not enthusiastic about getting a new tap put in as that wall is ... well, given what I said about my grandad's reluctance to spend money, God alone knows what's going on behind that...

I assume that would have an interior thread to screw on to the tap and an exterior for the adaptor? Where can I get these from?
